Appleford School Preparatory Program
The preparatory program at Appleford School caters to children in grades 4 through 8, offering a nurturing environment that prepares students for the demands of high school. Each child benefits from the dedicated attention of a class teacher who closely monitors both academic progress and personal development, with additional support from a learning assistant. With class sizes limited to no more than ten students, each child receives a tailored educational experience.
The curriculum for the preparatory years is designed to build self-confidence while laying down essential literacy and numeracy skills. For students in grades 4 to 6, the “Creative Curriculum” emphasizes active learning strategies and project-based education. Facilities such as the Forest School, vegetable garden, and polytunnel provide extensive opportunities for outdoor learning.
As students advance to grades 7 and 8, they are introduced to a broader curriculum taught by subject specialists. Additionally, access to high school resources further enriches their educational journey.
Transition to High School
The transition from preparatory to high school marks a significant milestone at Appleford. By the end of grade 8, students select their subjects for the upcoming exams in grades 9, 10, and 11. The focus is on earning GCSE and/or BTEC qualifications, with subject studies commencing in grade 9 to allow ample time for in-depth learning and advancement.
In the senior years, each student is assigned a tutor who, alongside a team of dedicated educators, offers guidance and support. This approach ensures that every student has the opportunity to flourish with specialized assistance in a supportive learning environment.
